Charles Andrew “Andy “ Thompson, 80, passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Portsmouth, Andy was the son of the late Charles R. and Agnes Blackmon.  Also, preceding him in death is a sister, Daisy T. Vaughan and a brother, Marvin Lee Thompson.

Andy had lived in Smithfield since 1960.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and retired from the city of Portsmouth as a fireman after 25 years of service.  He was an avid outdoorsman and a passionate gardener and immaculate landscaper.  He shared his craft with his immediate neighbors by offering his handyman and landscaping services.  He loved children and the youth and was an avid high school sports fan.  Andy would always “cheer on” the winning team.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 56 years, Ada C. Thompson; son, Russell K. Barlow, and two sisters, Dorothy T. Griffin of Portsmouth and Agnes T. Kucsan of N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and a host of extended family.

A service celebrating Andy’s life will be held Sunday, Feb. 7, 2 p.m. in Colonial Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Donald R. Rhoton officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Luke’s Memorial Park.  Family and friends will gather Saturday, Feb. 6, 6:30-7:30 p.m., at the funeral home for visitation.
