A Zuni man was also arrested in connection with an alleged case of child abuse at a home on Yellow Hammer Road.
Justin Cox, 33, who last lived in the 7000 block of Yellow Hammer Road, was charged with child neglect and is being held without bond in the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
The case centers on a five-year old boy who was rushed to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters earlier this week and remains in critical condition.
Also arrested was Jaye Lynn Hadley, 32, who was living in the house but her relationship with Cox is unknown at this time, said Lt. Tommy Potter with the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office.
The child’s biological father lives in Sussex County, Potter said.
Hadley was charged with child abuse and aggravated malicious wounding and is also being held without bond in Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
When paramedics arrived on the scene Jan. 8, they administered Narcan (naloxone) to the boy as a precaution, as well as other medications and CPR, said Potter.
Narcan is used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
While the boy reacted positively to the Narcan, it is not known if he had ingested any opioids or the reaction was a result of the other measures and that can be determined at the hospital, Potter said.
The boy suffered multiple injuries, with the most serious to his head and brain, said Potter.
Paramedics also noticed a strong smell of marijuana upon arrival at the home, Potter said.
The investigation is ongoing.
