Smithfield Foods is donating thousands of excess medical grade disposable face shields to local health care workers at hospitals and nursing homes in an effort to help them prevent, treat and manage COVID-19.
In a June 18 announcement, the company said the donation of more than 115,000 face shields is worth about $700,000. Employees began using temporary face shields when the virus pandemic first emerged. The disposable personal protective equipment has been replaced with permanent shields, as they have become available.
This donation adds to Smithfield Foods’ previous giving of more than $30 million in cash and in-kind donations as part of the company’s COVID-19 response through its hunger-relief initiative, Helping Hungry Homes.
