Scholarship awarded

The Schoolhouse Museum awarded its 2020 scholarship to Tyrell Newby. Tyrell is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Newby.  He is a 2020 graduate of Surry County High School where he achieved academic success and participated in numerous extracurricular activities.  Tyrell is a skilled athlete and played baseball all four years of high school, serving as captain in his senior year.  He is attending Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina where he plans to major in History Education.

The Schoolhouse Museum awards an annual $1,000 scholarship to an African-American high school senior from any Isle of Wight or Surry County High School who plans to attend college.  Any student currently enrolled in an advanced educational program may also apply. Scholarship criteria include two letters of recommendation, school transcript, minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, participation in extracurricular and community activities and verification of need.  Students interested in applying for the 2021 scholarship may download the application from the Museum’s website, www.schoolhousemuseum.org. Completed applications should be returned to The Schoolhouse Museum, P.O. Box 1113, Smithfield, VA 23430 by April 11, 2021.
