Editor, The Smithfield Times:

I have worked the polls for quite a while and am now the chief of the Longview Precinct. I just wanted to thank everyone who came out to vote on Election Day.

Everyone who came to vote was very courteous and patient. This was especially true for new people who had recently moved to the county and for whatever reason their address change did not make it to our registrar’s office. Most were able to complete a new Virginia Voter Registration Application, which we give to our registrar for processing. With a quick call to the registrar we were able to determine their polling place of record and provide directions if needed.

There are also a lot of people behind the scenes who help us to ensure that everyone eligible to vote gets to vote: the county Electoral Board and Registrar’s Office, which provide us our training, support and the answers to any questions we have throughout the day; VaughanTECH, which provides computer support if needed; the Carrollton Ruritan Club, which provides a clean and safe place for our voters and crew; since we are not permitted to leave the polling location, Fatboy’s Grill & Steamshack, which was able to deliver our lunch order; and, last but not least, the men and women who work the polls.

We arrive at 5 a.m. to set up and ensure everything is in place and in working order. After the polls close, we have to ensure all the reports are properly completed, everything is cleaned up and secured. Results are called into the Registrar’s Office and all official documents are delivered to the Registrar’s Office. Thank you, Longview Precinct voters.
