Two Smithfield area events are planned to commemorate Veterans Day.

At 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, VFW Post 8545 plans a ceremony at the Isle of Wight Veterans Memorial on North Church Street. In case of rain, the event will be moved indoors to the Smithfield Center, 220 N. Church St.

Shane Hamilton, a retired Air Force colonel, will be the featured speaker. Performing music will be the Smithfield HIgh School Chorus’ trio of Lyric Slaughter, Kaylea Manners and Alexis Brooks, and the school band’s trumpeters, the Melillo brothers.

Also this week, Westside Elementary School will host a drive-through Veterans Day event from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Nov. 12 to honor members of the military in the community. Veterans may drive up to the front of the building, at 800 Main St., to be presented with handmade cards and posters from students, along with a patriotic cookie.

“Westside students and staff want veterans to know how much they are loved, respected, and appreciated for their service to our country,” officials said in their announcement.
