For the first time in Smithfield’s wrestling program history, the wrestling team captured a Regional Championship title, hosted at Smithfield High School on Feb. 11.
The team also achieved a program record of 11 champions for second-year Head Coach Tony Leonard. For nearly a quarter-century, the team has been chasing a regional title, coming up just short in 2015, 2016, and 2020 seasons as the runner-up.
All 14 Smithfield wrestlers will advance to the 4A State Championships, which will be held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on Feb. 20. Due to COVID-19 VHSL restrictions, no fans will be allowed in attendance; those interested in following the team’s progress at states can do so on trackwrestling.com.
