Two people are facing charges in connection with an abduction this month in the Smithfield area.

Shakeila Evans, 33, of Pinehurst Drive in Smithfield, is charged with abduction by force or intimidation, assault and battery and destruction of property. She was remanded to the Western Tidewater Regional Jail on no bond.

According to Capt. Tommy Potter of the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office, the circumstances that led to the charges began on or about March 5, when a man was abducted from the 16000 block of Scotts Factory Road. The victim was taken to Suffolk, where he was forced to withdraw money from his bank account.

While at the financial institution, Potter said, the victim was able to alert bank employees to his situation and they notified the Suffolk Police Department. Isle of Wight law enforcement also responded, and as a result, Evans was arrested.

After Evans’ arrest, Potter said that Kevin Lamont Bazemore, who also resides on Pinehurst Drive in Smithfield, engaged in activities to intimidate and bribe the witnesses or victims in the abduction case involving Evans. Bazemore is charged with bribery, felony obstruction of justice and conspiracy to commit a felony.

“As a result of the investigation into the activities of Bazemore, Shakeila Evans was also charged with additional charges relating to bribery, obstruction of justice and conspiracy to commit a felony,” Potter said. “A bond hearing and arraignment are pending for both Evans and Bazemore in Isle of Wight General District Court.”

Evans is next due in court at 10 a.m. on March 25 for a bond hearing. Bazemore is due in court at 1 p.m. on April 1 for his bond hearing, according to online records. Bazemore, who is 46, is also in custody at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
