James Porter O’Briant III

James Porter O’Briant III, 79, of Windsor, passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2021. He was the son of the late James Porter O’Briant Jr. and Lorraine Whitworth O’Briant, of Newport News. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Martha O’Briant Maurer, of Newport News.
Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many. Jim dedicated his life to service. Service to God, his family, his church and the local community. He was a Master Mason for 54 years, member of Purdie Lodge #170 in Windsor. He was a lifelong Boy Scout, member of Windsor Troop 41. Jim was very active in his church, teaching Sunday School for more than 50 years. He served his local community on the Windsor Town Council, Windsor Planning Commission, Isle of Wight County Planning Commission, Isle of Wight Museum Foundation Board, Isle of Wight Academy Foundation Advisory Board, Windsor Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley Jones O’Briant; daughters, Carol Blanton, Amy Remington and Becky O’Briant; grandchildren, Justin Campbell, Brittany (Michael) Powell and Ethan Remington; and great-grandchild, Lizzy Powell.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2021, at R.W. Baker Funeral Home, Suffolk. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2021, at Windsor Congregational Christian Church with burial to follow at Windsor Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to: Shriners Hospital for Children, Windsor Congregational Christian Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
