Isle of Wight County’s Sheriff’s Office responded to a bomb threat Sunday at Smithfield High School made against Liberty Live Church, a congregation that holds services in the school on weekends.

According to Capt. Tommy Potter, spokesman for the agency, Isle of Wight’s dispatch center received a call from a male subject at approximately 9:35 a.m. who threatened to plant numerous pipe bomb devices near the school. Deputies assisted church staff in evacuating the building and K9 teams searched the premises, though no explosive devices were found.

Potter said the threat was directed specifically toward the congregation and not the school system.
