Sarah Virginia Chapman, 71, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2021. She was born in 1949 to Virginia (Betts) and Joel Chapman of Smithfield. She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Geoffrey Rogers; daughter, Jennifer Ryan (Patrick); son, Douglas Rogers (Judy); and two cherished grandchildren, Abigail and William Ryan. She is also survived by her sisters, Susan Anderson (Gregory) and Louise Riley (William).
Mrs. Rogers graduated in 1972 from the College of William & Mary with a degree in mathematics. During college, she was a member of Kappa Delta. She taught math on the Peninsula, first at Thorpe Intermediate in Hampton. Then after her children were born, she returned to teaching math at Ferguson High School in Newport News. She spent the remainder of her career at Woodside High School in Newport News before her retirement in 2007. She loved teaching geometry.
In addition to her work as an educator, Sarah will be remembered for her devotion to family and her wonderful meals. She also made delicious cookies and breads. Sarah was also skilled at sewing, drawing and cross-stitch. She enjoyed making Halloween costumes and clothes for Jennifer and Douglas when they were growing up and doll clothes for Abby. She was an active member in her church, Denbigh United Presbyterian and served as an elder.
After she and Geoff retired, they spent time sailing on a Pearson 40 with Seaford Yacht Club. She enjoyed going out on the water and never got seasick. She would happily entertain the grandchildren down below if the weather was rough or they were tired.
Memorial contributions may be made to the AFTD. There will be a memorial service at Denbigh United Presbyterian Church at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 3, with a reception to follow.
