Burkes Outlet, a clothing and home goods retailer, will open its newest store in the Smithfield Shopping Plaza shopping center on Oct. 28.

Burkes will occupy the former Peebles department store, which briefly rebranded as Gordmans last year. Gordmans’ and Peebles’ parent company, Stage Stores, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Burkes is owned by Florida-based Beall’s Inc., which operates over 500 retail locations across 13 states according to its website.

The retailer is holding a hiring event this afternoon, Sept. 22, through 3 p.m. at the Hamtown Hub inside the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce office at 100 Main St., Smithfield.

According to Jessica Jones-Healey, president of the Chamber of Commerce, Burkes expects to hire roughly 30 employees for its Smithfield location.
