A Smithfield woman died in a two-vehicle crash on Route 17 Sept. 23.

According to Sgt. Michelle Anaya, spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police, the crash occurred a few minutes after noon in the southbound lanes of the highway near the bridge connecting Carrollton to North Suffolk when the driver of a 2010 Ford Focus, 35-year-old Joyneia C. Joyner, lost control of her vehicle and hydroplaned – striking a northbound 2020 Freightliner head-on. Joyner died upon impact. The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured.

Joyner was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and alcohol was not a factor, Anaya said.
