Gospel artist to perform at Summer Concert Series

The threat of severe weather caused cancellation of the Summer Concert Series’ 2022 debut last week, but this week’s forecast looks much better.
Chesapeake native “Slater Joel” Johnson is scheduled to perform at 7 p.m. on the gazebo stage in front of The Smithfield Times office on Main Street.
Slater has gained U.S. and international recognition as a gospel recording artist. He was raised in a spiritual household by his father, who is a pastor, and his mother, who was an educator. His love of music began at an early age as his parents played gospel music quartets, including The Mighty Clouds of Joy.
Slater has toured in Europe with Michael M. Smith and served on the same programs with artists such as Peggy Britt, Marvin Sapp, Vernon Gordon, Pastor Norman Hutchins, Deon Kipping, J.J. Hairston, and PJ Morton.
Slater was also featured on the live recording “Bishop Kim Brown presents Earl Bynum and The Mount Unity Choir.” That performance won the 2014 Stellar Award for Contemporary Choir of the Year. For several years, he has served as a worship leader at the historic Hampton University Ministers’ Conference.
