Robert (Bob) Noel Woods, 91, of Smithfield passed away July 18, 2022. Bob was born in Decatur, Illinois, March 11, 1931. He was the elder of two sons to Robert and Leone Woods. He graduated from Springfield, IL high school and Wabash College with degrees in Mathematics and Physics. There he was an outstanding member of the track team and sports editor of the college yearbook. While at Wabash, Bob married Nancy Ann Thrush. They had four children.

In 1956 Bob took a job with Sangamo Electric as their Quality Control engineer. In 1962 he transferred with Sangamo to Easley, SC within their electrical meter production section. In 1968 he moved to Blacksburg, VA as Quality Control Director for Poly Scientific. He retired as Vice President of Manufacturing at Poly Scientific, a Division of Litton Corporation in April of 1995.

Bob married Betty Hough in June 2003 and they resided in Smithfield until his death. Bob found his 35 years as Scoutmaster rewarding. He enjoyed gardening ( he was a Master Gardener), cooking, reading, problem solving and making lists but above all Bob loved being on the water, be it Claytor Lake, the James River or any ocean. He was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Suffolk.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, brother John, first wife Nancy and daughter Katherine. He is survived by his wife Betty of Smithfield and three sons, Phillip (Mary) of Radford, Robert (Gwen) of Galax and Steven (Amy) of Blacksburg. Seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

His life celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 6 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church 1185 Bridge Road, Suffolk, VA 23433. Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.
