Area teams beat storm but fall on gridiron

High school football games were moved up a day or two to beat Hurricane Ian, but area teams were unable to beat their opponents.
Smithfield High lost 20-7 to Poquoson at home on Thursday, Sept. 29. The Packers fell to 2-3 overall, 1-2 in Bay Rivers District play. Poquoson improved to 4-1 overall, 3-1 in the district.
The Packers travel to Lafayette, 4-1, on Thursday, Oct. 6.
Windsor remained winless after falling 29-0 to Bruton in Williamsburg on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
The Dukes, who forfeited to rival Franklin the week prior due to a shortage of healthy players, fell to 0-7. They host Sussex Central, 2-3, this Friday, Oct. 7.
Isle of Wight Academy lost 50-7 at unbeaten Fredericksburg Christian on Saturday, Oct. 1. The Chargers fell to 0-4 and will host Norfolk Christian this Friday.
Surry lost 50-23 to Greensville County in a shootout Thursday night in Surry.
The Cougars fell to 1-4 overall, 0-2 in the Tri-Rivers District. Greensville improved to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in district play. Surry travels to Franklin on Friday for another district tilt.
