Editor, The Smithfield Times:
In reference to your article “Planners OK expanding solar farm in southern Isle of Wight” on Oct. 26, the plan to change from a fixed installation to a rotating design is a smart move.
The American Physics Society has released a study that reveals that the rotating panels can generate as much as 32% more power than a field of fixed ones. Yes, the rotating ones require more space, but that will allow various crops/livestocks to be grown.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has published guidance for the joint use of farmland for the raising of crops/livestock while accommodating solar panels. They are using the term “agrivoltaics” to address the concept.
