The screening is In an attempt to identify, locate and evaluate children 2 through 21 who are in need of special education services and/or protection under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. If a parent suspects that their child may have delays and/or disabilities, the parent can bring their child for a brief screening of the child’s fine and gross motor skills, speech language development and cognitive abilities.

 

LUNCH & LEARN – A Vital Connection: The James River Bridge at 12:30 p.m. Opened Nov. 17, 1928, the James River Bridge has linked Warwick County/Newport News to Isle of Wight County for 93 years. This look-back examines life before the bridge when Colonial ferries and steamers served this purpose. The historical journey begins with the dedication of the original crossing, which was hailed as the world’s longest bridge over water. It will continue through the construction of the current structure, and it will further detail the story of how the bridge received its official name. GET OUTSIDE RACES – Windsor Castle Park, 705 Cedar St., Smithfield, at 8 a.m. A portion of the event proceeds benefit the Smithfield Kiwanis Club. Choose from the 3-miler race or the longer 2-, 4- or 8-hour races. Every runner receives a hand-branded wood finisher’s medal and an additional finisher’s item. Each loop is about 150 feet in gain. TOWN OF WINDSOR CHRISTMAS PARADE  – The Town of Windsor Christmas parade lineup will be at 3 p.m. on Shirley Drive (next to Farmers Bank) and the parade will begin at 4 p.m. The parade will start on Shirley Drive and proceed to Church Street, ending on Duke Street.

A time with Santa for the children will be held at the library gazebo following the parade at approximately 4:45 p.m.  Handicap parking will be available at the Duke Street parking lot across from the library. DAR ESSAY CONTEST – The Colonel William Allen Chapter of Smithfield, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, announces its 2022 Student Essay contests. One contest is for students in grades 5-8 and the high school contest is for students in grades 9-12. Both contests involve students researching a specific American Revolution person or event and writing an essay. SEEKING SMITHFIELD 2022 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS – The Smithfield Ruritan and Smithfield Rotary Clubs invite individuals and organizations to submit nominations for a person to be named “Citizen of the Year” for 2022. This award is sponsored jointly by the both clubs and has been presented to deserving individuals since 1970. Nominees should be individuals living in the Smithfield area whose activities have benefited Smithfield area residents. The nominations should include the nominee’s name, address, phone number and a complete description of the nominees’ activities and involvement that warrant this award.
