The Smithfield Soccer Club revived its “Kicking it for Cancer” charity tournament the weekend of March 4-5.
Last year, the club hosted over 40 teams at Nike Park in Carrollton, some from as far away as North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
This year, participation was up to 48 teams, including one from Lunenberg County, more than 80 miles west of Carrollton.
Club Treasurer Shawn Baughman said last year’s event netted close to $9,500 for Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society with chapters nationwide. This year’s tournament raised over $10,000.
“It was one of the best events we had in a long time,” Baughman said.
This year, in addition to donating proceeds to Relay for Life, the tournament made contributions to the Windsor High School Booster Club.
This year’s participants include boys and girls teams ranging in age from 9 to 14. Games were on Saturday and Sunday.
This year marks the 11th annual Kicking it for Cancer tournament.
The Smithfield Soccer Club is run by a board of directors consisting of President Robert Tucker VIce President Joe Daniels, Baughman as treasurer, Secretary Lizz Renfro and Field Manager Dylan Tanney.
