Letter – Send Wawa down the road

Editor, The Smithfield Times:
Smithfield has five gas stations just within the town limits and four more outlying in close proximity.
Why has it become all right for the large corporations to want to move in, possibly with local officials’ blessing from what it looks like, and take away business and income from the local established businesses. Locals should be protected, not undermined.
Allowing Wawa to move in will take money away from our long-established local gas stations. Because it also has a full fast-food counter, the other fast-food businesses in the area will also have their profits cut.
If Wawa wants to find somewhere to build, let it look farther out around Old Dominion Hay or Bennett’s Creek Nursery going into Suffolk. That is where a lot of the future building and construction is headed anyway.
If “Shop Local” means anything, officials will not approve Wawa’s request.
