An Isle of Wight County sheriff’s deputy and her husband were each arrested earlier this month and charged with assaulting each other.
According to Capt. Tommy Potter, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded May 6 to a reported domestic disturbance on Robin Lane, where Karen Hanley, an employee of the Sheriff’s Office’s investigative unit, resides with her husband, Mark. The deputies determined the couple to have “been involved in a domestic disturbance,” and “based on further investigation, both were arrested for domestic assault,” Potter said.
Both Hanleys face a misdemeanor domestic assault and battery charge.
Both were released on a personal recognizance bond. Investigator Hanley has been placed on administrative duties pending a professional standards investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
“This is a personnel matter and will be handled as such,” Potter said.
There is “no anticipation” that the incident will have any impact on current or former investigations Hanley had taken part in, Potter said.
