Virginia’s “5 & Dime” trail, named for the drive from Surry County to Richmond on Routes 5 and 10, officially launched on Aug. 3.
The trail is intended to attract tourists by highlighting restaurants, retailers and parks in Surry, James City, Charles City and Prince George counties, as well as the city of Hopewell.
According to Renee Chapline, a consultant for Surry’s Economic Development Authority, there are 16 attractions within the county identified on the trail route.
Among them are the Surry County Farmers Market, which operates from May through October on Fridays from 4-7 p.m. at 45 School St. and the visitors center at 267 Church St.
The trail also includes attractions on Route 31 less than a five-minute drive from the trail, including the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry that connects Surry with James City County, Surry Seafood Co. and Smith’s Fort Plantation, a circa-1761 manor house on land that, according to Preservation Virginia, was given by Chief Wahunsenacawh, also known as Powhatan, as a dowry for his daughter Pocahontas’ marriage to John Rolfe in 1614. Preservation Virginia, a statewide organization dedicated to preserving Virginia’s historic sites, owns and operates Smith’s Fort, which is open for interior tours from March through December.
