Do you have archaeological items in your personal collection? Perhaps some pottery sherds, metal fragments, tools, coins or glass?
Bring your local artifacts to the Isle of Wight County Museum, 103 Main St. in Smithfield, during an Archaeological Pop-Up Workshop from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 23 to be identified by professional archaeologists from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
The following experts will work to identify objects and share more information about their history.
- Mike Clem – Eastern Regional archaeologist with expertise on archaeology in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States.
- Laura Galke – chief curator of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and a specialist in the colonial period of Virginia.
- Chris Egghart – expert in stone tool manufacturing and technology during the pre-European contact eras of Virginia.
The event is free. Participants are asked to limit artifacts to 10 or fewer. Those without objects to bring are still encouraged to attend, as the archaeologists will show a few artifacts from the department’s collection.
The event is for educational purposes. The archaeologists don’t provide estimates of monetary value of items and don’t wish to procure artifacts at the event.
