Tidal flooding from Idalia closes Smithfield roads

Portions of South Church Street, Jericho Road and Rescue Road are closed due to tidal fooding as fallout from Tropical Storm Idalia passes over the Hampton Roads region.

The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning for Isle of Wight and Surry counties through 2 a.m. Sept. 2, which warns that up to 2 feet of water above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

As of 11:30 a.m., South Church Street was closed at Smithfield Station. Rescue Road was closed at the bridge.

An 11 a.m. update from the National Hurricane Center predicts rainfall from Idalia will diminish by early afternoon from coastal North Carolina into southeast Virginia.

The NWS is urging area residents to take action to protect flood-prone property. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth, the NWS warns.

The NWS forecast for Smithfield shows a 30% chance of rain and 18 to 20 mph wind, with gusts as high as 31 mph. 

The NHC forecast shows Idalia heading away from the North Carolina coast toward Bermuda by the evening of Sept. 2.
