An unoccupied Rushmere house in the final stages of construction caught fire Monday morning.
Crews from Rushmere’s, Smithfield’s, Carrollton’s and Surry’s volunteer fire departments responded along with firefighters with Isle of Wight County Fire and Rescue at 7:21 a.m. to Creekway Drive.
According to Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Chief Garry Windley, crews were pulled back from the interior after attempting a quick knock-down of the fire due to the volume of flames and heat. The fire was declared under control by 8:44 a.m., though crews remained on the scene during the afternoon to extinguish hot spots.
There were no reported injuries. The fire is under investigation and no cause has been determined.
