Isle of Wight County supervisors on May 16 unanimously approved the Virginia Department of Transportation’s secondary six-year improvement program for Isle of Wight.
“What we’re looking at tonight is the county specific secondary plan; the secondary plan applies to secondary road formula funds only, so we’re not looking at the Nike Park extended project, we’re not looking revenue-sharing projects, we’re not looking at the Turner Drive roundabout project,” said Isle of Wight Transportation Administrator Jamie Oliver.
VDOT has proposed a separate six-year plan for Isle of Wight’s primary roads, which include the proposed Turner Drive roundabout, Nike Park Road extension and improvements to the Carrollton Boulevard corridor, also known as Route 17. VDOT is soliciting public comments through May 20 at https://www.ctb.virginia.gov/planning/springmeetings2024/default.asp or by mail to Virginia Department of Transportation, 1401 E. Broad St., Richmond, VA 23219.
The county-approved secondary six-year plan includes the paving of 0.8 miles of Woody Acres Way from Bethel Church Lane to a dead end, at an estimated $360,000 cost, with construction slated to begin in August. Also listed is the paving of 0.4 miles of Blairs Creek Way from Woody Acres Way to a dead end, at $285,000, also slated to begin in August.
Paving 1.3 miles of Morgarts Beach Road from Old Stage Highway to Blounts Corner Road, at a cost of $727,175, is slated to begin during fiscal year 2029-30.
Paving 2.1 miles of Strawberry Plains from Broadwater Road to Racetrack Road at $1.2 million is also included in the plan, but construction has not been scheduled for a specific year yet.
Five other roads – Mokete Trail, Maynards Store Road, Meadow Drive, Sandy Point Lane and Dodge Lane – were deemed ineligible for funding under VDOT’s unpaved roads program.
The county has identified five additional roads it intends to seek funding for through VDOT’s unpaved roads program, but they are presently not included in the secondary six-year plan. These are Tings Road, Easy Street, Orgard Lane/Peachtree Lane, Haynes Lane and Booker T. Drive.
