Letter – Opposed to VSBA exit

Editor, The Smithfield Times:

I am appalled and saddened to know that the Isle of Wight County’s School Board withdrew from the Virginia School Board Association (VSBA).

The VSBA is not a left or right organization. It provides many benefits and advocates for education-related causes in the Virginia Assembly.

The four board members who voted to withdraw should do research. They will find that being a member is vital to the county. The positives certainly outweigh the negatives.

It is a privilege and honor to be elected to represent your constituents in your district. This is a public office. You volunteered to run for office. You are to represent all people in your district. Together, you are to make the best choice that perpetuates learning in Isle of Wight County. Your personal family values and religious values are for you and not your constituents.

I applaud the IWCS superintendent for opposing the division’s withdrawal. Parents, this is a wakeup call. Know the agenda of the candidates and vote out of office members who impede the progress of educating the children in Isle of Wight County.
