Letter – Same goals; different views

Editor, The Smithfield Times:

I wish to respond to Helen Eggleston (“Trump beats the alternative,” June 12).

I have a lot of respect toward Helen and her husband, Mike. They are both active and well prepared for discussions over local, state and national policies. I think Helen and I mostly agree, such as with the Second Amendment, but sometimes we don’t, such as abortion and a woman’s right to choose.

From her letter to the editor, which was in response to what I wrote (“Trump in his own words,” June 5), I find it ironic that we have the same goals in mind. We both want a prosperous future for our country, our children and our grandchildren.

Helen claims to not be voting for Trump but for our future. What kind of future do you want, “cupcake”? I am no fan of Joe Biden, but his administration did not try to overthrow an election as Trump and Rudy Giuliani tried to do. Thus, Trump’s quote: “All I need is 11,780 votes” (in Georgia). Trump’s comments fueled an insurrection.

He also held onto classified documents and refused to give them back. He has been indicted for these crimes, that are yet to go to trial — three separate trials! Of course, Trump is now a convicted felon for 34 counts of fraud. The jury and the grand juries are all made up of regular citizens, but Trump, doing what he does, has continually attacked our judicial system.

As Helen stated, none of us is perfect. That is true. She is also right about our country “going to Hades in a handbasket.” The Republican Party is fully supporting the “Big Lie,” that the 2020 election was stolen. There is no proof.

The Big Lie has turned the Republican Party into Trump’s cult, and many citizens support him no matter what he says or does. What he says goes! Such as the bipartisan legislation dealing with our border crisis. Trump killed it. He argued that he needed something to run on, plus he didn’t want Biden to get credit for the legislation.

So where is the Trump cult on law and order? If elected he wants to go after all those who have played a part in his convictions and indictments. Seems like Helen wants a dictator, not a president. That could set up a highly questionable future for our democracy.
