For the second time this season, extreme heat has forced organizers of the Downtown Smithfield Summer Concert Series to cancel a show.
The National Weather Service issued an Excessive Heat Warning of “dangerously hot conditions” until 8 p.m. today. Heat index values of up to 112 degrees are predicted.
The Navy Fleet Forces Command pop band had been scheduled to perform at 7 p.m. on the Main Street Square stage.
The concert series, which includes Friday night performances from Memorial Day to Labor Day, resumes Aug. 9 with a performance by the Williamsburg Classic Swing Orchestra under the direction of Smithfield’s Dru Stowe.
The Summer Concert Series is sponsored by the Isle of Wight Arts League, The Smithfield Times and the Town of Smithfield.
