The Windsor Police Department and Surry County Sheriff’s Office will hold their National Night Out festivities on Aug. 6.
The Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office and Smithfield Police Department will each hold their festivities on the first Tuesday in October rather than the nationally observed first Tuesday in August. The Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office will also set up a booth at Windsor’s event.
Surry’s festivities, set for 5:30-8 p.m. at the county’s parks and recreation center at 205 Enos Farm Drive, will include giveaways of school supplies and backpacks for elementary, middle and high school students, free hotdogs, hamburgers and hot fish and cold drinks, and an opportunity to see the Surry Volunteer Fire Department’s newest truck and other first responder vehicles.
National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support and participation for local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals that the neighborhood is organized.
Windsor’s festivities will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the Windsor Town Center, located at 23361 Courthouse Highway. Windsor’s event will include free hot dogs, drinks, chips, a bounce house for children, crime prevention and fire prevention information, children’s crafts and more.
National Night Out, according to its website, began in 1984 via a network of law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch groups, civic groups, crime prevention associations and volunteers came together to coordinate events in 23 states.
