Many Isle of Wight County residents awoke Friday to a 6:35 a.m. tornado warning sent via the county’s IW Alert text-message system, stating radar had spotted a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado moving forward Windsor at 40 mph.
Others woke up to find themselves without electricity, though much of the county appears to have weathered Tropical Storm Debby relatively unscathed.
According to Dominion Energy’s outage map, there were between 51 and 250 Isle of Wight County residents without power as of just after 10 a.m., all of whom had their power restored a half-hour later.
Between one and 50 additional customers were still without power in Surry as of 10:30 a.m.
According to a Dominion news release, there were 2,400 customers without power as of 8:15 a.m., primarily in Suffolk, Virginia Beach, the Peninsula and Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The figure had dropped to between one and 50 in Suffolk, Portsmouth and Norfolk by just after 10:30 a.m.
Windsor-based Community Electric Cooperative’s outage map wasn’t reporting any interruption of service for Isle of Wight or Surry counties as of just after 10 a.m.
Dominion’s news release warns that due to lingering storm impacts, there could be more outages as remnants of Debby move through the area.
Isle of Wight and Surry will remain under a flood watch. According to the National Weather Service, excessive rainfall may result in flooding of rivers and other low-lying flood-prone locations.
