The second multi-day shutdown of the Cypress Creek Bridge, like the first in April, has ended ahead of schedule.

The Virginia Department of Transportation had, a week in advance, announced a planned Aug. 19-23 closure from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. of both lanes of the circa-1975 bridge that connects downtown Smithfield with the east end of town.

The bridge reopened the afternoon of Aug. 20 to one-way westbound traffic into downtown.

The planned five-day closure, which finished 3 days early, entailed placing newly fabricated bridge beams in their place. The previous multi-day closure, which ended on April 9 a full 3½  days early, had involved the removal of the old bridge beams.

The one-way westbound restriction will remain in place for the duration of the estimated two-year bridge rehabilitation timeline.

There are two additional planned multi-day closures, which to date have been occurring roughly four months apart.
