Gyms on September agenda for Town Council, Planning Commission

Published 8:18 pm Tuesday, August 27, 2024

Smithfield’s Town Council and Planning Commission, within a week of each other’s September meetings, will each consider applications for proposed gyms.

The council is set to hold its required hearing, and potentially vote, Sept. 3 on the special use permit application of Fit Body Boot Camp, a national gym franchise seeking to locate a branch in the Smithfield Commons shopping center next to McDonald’s on South Church Street.

Meanwhile, the shopping center unit’s former tenant, Raw Fitness, has petitioned for after-the-fact approval to relocate to the adjacent Smithfield Square shopping center anchored by Food Lion.

According to public notices published in the Aug. 21 print edition of The Smithfield Times:

  •  The Town Council hearing on Edmo Soares’ special use permit application for an “indoor commercial recreation facility” at 1807 S. Church St., the address of the proposed Fit Body gym, will coincide with the council’s 6:30 p.m. meeting on Sept. 3.
  •  A week later, the town’s Planning Commission will hold a separate hearing on Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. on the application of Amos Riddick and Smithfield Square Association for another indoor commercial recreation facility at 1915 S. Church St., the listed address for Raw Fitness.

The Planning Commission gave a unanimously favorable recommendation on July 9 to Soares’ application for Fit Body, but in a separate vote, tabled Soares’ request for an entrance corridor overlay review, which is the sole jurisdiction of the Planning Commission and is triggered when a business seeks to locate within designated 500-foot-wide zones along each side of North and South Church streets, West Main Street, Benns Church Boulevard and Battery Park Road. The commissioners postponed their decision until Soares returns with renderings of the new signage he proposes adding to the shopping center.
