Drive-thru Starbucks coming to Smithfield?

A standalone Starbucks with a drive-thru window may be coming to Smithfield.
Smithfield Planning Commissioner Charles Bryan asked the town’s community development and planning director, Tammie Clary, at the body’s Aug. 13 meeting about the status of an application the town had received for what he described as a Starbucks at South Church Street and Benns Church Boulevard adjacent to the Hampton Inn.
“We have not received an updated site plan of that area; they are still in site development,” Clary said.
Clary told The Smithfield Times that earlier this year, the town had received an application for a drive-thru restaurant in front of the Hampton Inn.
“We have not received any signage applications to indicate what the restaurant will be,” Clary said.
Starbucks, in an Aug. 21 email to the Times, said there are talks, but no definite plans, to bring a standalone Starbucks to Smithfield.
“We want to bring the right experience at the right time and are considering bringing a Starbucks to the Smithfield community,” the statement said. “We consider a number of factors before bringing a new store to a neighborhood and need to determine if it makes sense in this community, just as we do in each new neighborhood we consider.”
Bryan, when asked for details, told the Times that “without any official application before the Planning Commission” it would be “premature to comment about Hampton Inn’s area development.”
According to Isle of Wight County’s online GIS map, there are two undeveloped parcels, one totaling 4.9 acres and the other 2.2 acres, adjacent to the hotel. Both parcels are owned by V & B Properties LLC and neither has been recently sold.
Smithfield currently has a Starbucks that operates out of the Kroger supermarket on Benns Church Boulevard. The statement from Starbucks did not specify whether the proposed drive-thru would be in addition to what’s inside Kroger or a relocation.
