On Thursday August 29th 2024, Margaret Ann Hubbard (82) of Smithfield, VA peacefully left this life. Ann, to her many friends and neighbors, was originally from Richmond, VA where she graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and attended Virginia Commonwealth University where she studied piano.
In the early 1980s Ann traded classical piano for a life of art and color with water-colors, acrylic, and oils taking lessons from many international, national, and regional teachers. In 1991 she collaborated with two other artists to open The Collage Arts Center in Smithfield. The Collage was a labor of love to bring arts and culture to the town that she loved, and over the years the non-profit grew into what became the modern-day Isle of Wight Arts League. In 2005 Ann and her husband, Carroll opened a gallery in their home on Main Street called Color Scapes where she spent many years creating and developing her art.
Ann didn’t just love art, she loved her family, and her family wasn’t just limited to her husband and children, but it also included many cats, dogs, fish, and even ducks over the years. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Carroll Hubbard, originally of Louisa, VA, her sister, Bobbi Bowen of Chesapeake, VA, her sons Travis and Alan Sams of Richmond, VA, her Daughter in law, Erin Sams of Richmond, VA, her granddaughters Carter and Abby Sams, of Richmond, VA and her grandson Christopher Sams also of Richmond, VA. Ann was preceded in death by her mother Margaret Kersey, her father Edward Kersey, and her daughter Dale Sams. A celebration of life will take place on September 21st at 3:00 PM at The Christ Episcopal Church located at 111 S Church St, Smithfield. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to the Isle of Wight Humane Society P.O Box 273 Smithfield, VA 23431
