The private school will host Suffolk Fire Chief Michael J. Barakey as its guest speaker for the assembly, held at the school’s campus at 14353 Benns Church Boulevard, next to St. Luke’s Historic Church & Museum.

Barakey will share his reflections and insights as students and community members gather to honor the courage, sacrifice and unity displayed during the attacks and their aftermath.

When al-Qaida terrorists hijacked four passenger airplanes and forced three of them to collide with the north and south towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the collisions and subsequent collapse of the twin towers killed nearly 3,000 people including 343 firefighters and paramedics. The fourth hijacked plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into an open field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, killing all passengers, crew and terrorists aboard. It remains the deadliest terrorist attack on United States soil.

Hampton Roads Classical’s ceremony will include performances by students, who will recite the American’s Creed and the preamble to the U.S. Constitution and sing patriotic songs, including “God Bless America.”
