Clifford Lee Smith

Clifford Lee Smith (“Smitty”), 96, of Smithfield, VA transitioned peacefully to his heavenly home on September 4, 2024, with his son and daughter by his side.
Smitty was born on August 2, 1928, in Charlottesville, VA at the UVA Hospital to Paul Henry and Gracie Pannel Smith. Smitty grew up in Waynesboro, VA, and was one of eight children. Smitty served in the United States Air Force, stationed in Galveston, TX.
In 1949, Smitty married Catherine K. Fitzgerald (“Kitty”). They had three children, Michael, Daniel, and Donna. Smitty, a brick mason by trade, moved his family from Waynesboro, VA, eventually settling in Rescue, VA. Smitty worked for a masonry company out of Norfolk, VA before starting his own business, Smithfield Masonry Company, in Smithfield, VA, in 1954. He truly enjoyed contributing to his community through his work as a brick mason. His beautiful brickwork can be seen throughout Smithfield and surrounding areas.
In addition to his parents, Smitty is preceded in death by his wife, Kitty, son, Danny, brothers, Harry, Johnny, and Randolph, and sisters, Barbara and Julia.
Smitty is survived by his son, Mike (Debbie), and daughter, Donna (Harold), grandchildren, Nichole, Rachel, Melody, Byron, Joshua, and Rixey, 11 great-grandchildren, sisters, Charlotte Harris and Mildred Davis, and a host of many special nieces and nephews.
