Editor, The Smithfield Times:

As a citizen I believe it is essential that we elect leaders who have a vision for Smithfield that is in alignment with the majority of its residents.

The Smithfield Times candidate forum is a great resource; residents can read and review candidates’ responses to important issues to the town of Smithfield.

Candidates Mary Ellen Berbermeyer, Bill Harris, Darren Cutler and Mike Smith’s responses clearly show their commitment to the town and residents by their desire for planned and managed growth that retains the historic and family-focused character of our town. They also advocate for fiscal responsibility by proposing to use limited resources for established town priorities and not investing town funds into private/public development with unknown long-term benefits and future liabilities.

A few years ago I started attending or watching the council meetings to learn more about ongoing town projects and proposed new development. I believe Mike Smith listens to the residents and votes in their and the town’s best interest. Frequent speakers Bill Harris and Mary Ellen Berbermeyer’s comments are always respectful, informative and include researched facts, which demonstrates that they understand the importance of responsible growth to our town. Darren Cutler, a more recent resident and speaker, is direct, asks focused and relevant questions and advocates for an accessible council responsive to town residents.

I believe Mary Ellen Berbermeyer, Darren Cutler, Bill Harris and Mike Smith will offer thoughtful leadership. They will weigh the need for long-term town growth while protecting the character and charm of today’s Smithfield.
