Jones Creek boat ramp repairs underway

One side of the Jones Creek boat ramp will be out of service for the next few weeks for repairs.

According to an Aug. 14 Facebook post by Isle of Wight County Parks and Recreation, the other ramp, piers and fishing pier remain open to the public.

The repairs began after the county accepted a bid of $224,910 by John K. George & Co., down from an April 19 bid of $584,000 by Carolina Marine Structures Inc., which the county had rejected.

According to the invitation for bids, the work would include the full replacement of the decking on two of the timber piers, repairs to the timber bents, braces, rendering and handrails, and a small concrete patch poured over the  existing concrete boat ramp to fill the transition to the timber decking. An additional component of the project calls for the installation of two new prefabricated ladders and the reinstallation of floaters to the floating dock.
