Letter – Hold developers accountable

Editor, The Smithfield Times:

Regarding “Cypress Creek homeowners feud with developer” (Sept. 11), the article did a good job conveying the issues that Cypress Creek Owners Association has with the developer but did not fully convey the reason for my presentation.

The Town of Smithfield has approved the building of 1,400 new homes and the Grange project is still under consideration. The reason I brought up the difficulties at Cypress Creek was to urge both the town and Isle of Wight County to get a process in place to better monitor the developers of all of these projects and prevent what has happened at Cypress Creek.

Per the developer’s proffer statement he should have been stopped from continuing to develop the property at the 56th certificate of occupancy and complete and convey the Fitness Center and Adult Pool to the CCOA. That did not happen. The developer has now fully completed his work and sold all the homesites. It’s going to be difficult to get him to complete the rest of the amenities that he has promised. I don’t want to see that happen in the future.

There has to be a better process of holding these developers to account, and it’s up to our town and county leadership to figure out how.
