Smithfield Police have charged a Smithfield woman with an Oct. 22 shooting at Jersey Park Apartments.

Deputy Police Chief Chris Meier said officers went to the scene at approximately 12:45 p.m. after reports that a woman had been shot in the arm. With assistance from the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office, police arrested a suspect the same day.

Nineteen-year-old Elriana Hill of Smithfield faces one count of aggravated malicious wounding, four counts of attempted malicious wounding, six counts of shooting within 1,000 feet of a school, one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle and one count of shooting into an occupied building – all felonies. She’s also charged with five counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony and four counts of misdemeanor destruction of property.

Westside Elementary, the referenced school located within 1,000 feet of the shooting, initiated a “secure protocol, formerly called a modified lockdown,” according to Isle of Wight County Schools spokeswoman Lynn Briggs.

From 12:50 to 1:07 p.m., students were kept inside and no visitors were allowed to enter or leave the school.

“During this time, students were not permitted to go outside of the building, but continued to follow their regular schedule for the day,” Westside Principal Matt Johnson said in a message to parents.

“We appreciate students and teachers remaining calm and continuing with learning during the event,” Johnson said. “The safety and security of our students is always our No. 1 priority.”

Johnson described the shooting as an “isolated incident which did not directly involve Westside Elementary School.”

“Law enforcement notified division administrators once the scene was secure,” he said.

Hill, a 2023 graduate of Smithfield High School, was being held without bond at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.

A Smithfield officer, upon finding the victim, applied a tourniquet and arranged her transport to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. Police say she’s since been released from the hospital.

“The Smithfield Police Department worked closely with the Virginia State Police and the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office during this incident,” said Smithfield Police Lt. William Wooley. “We extend our sincere thanks to our law enforcement partners for their crucial assistance.”

Wooley said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information related to the shooting should contact police at 757-357-3247.

Hill was scheduled to make her first court appearance at 9 a.m. on Oct. 23.
