November tours set for Bacon’s Castle, Smith’s Fort

Preservation Virginia, which owns and maintains the 17th century Bacon’s Castle and circa-1761 Smith’s Fort manor houses in Surry County, will host events at each in November.

On Nov. 2, the events of Bacon’s Rebellion take center stage at Bacon’s Castle from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities will include reenactors cooking over an open fire and demonstrating life in the 17th century, particularly at Bacon’s Castle, archaeologists sharing what discovered artifacts tell us about past events, contents of the Rebellion Trash Pit, documents related to Bacon’s Rebellion and discussion of its repercussions, period artisans demonstrating their skills and selling their wares,17th century focused house tours and more. Food and beverage vendors will also be on site.

Faith Page, a College of William & Mary student who interned with Preservation Virginia over the summer, will present a Black history tour at Smith’s Fort at 2 p.m. on Nov. 9 and Dec. 14.

The tour will focus on the history of the Gray’s Creek Farm and the families that purchased the property in 1886. Smith’s Fort is located at 217 Smith Fort Lane, Surry. The tour is free but registration is required and slots are limited. To register, visit preservationvirginia.org/upcoming-events/.
