Letter – Power trip in Surry

Editor, The Smithfield Times:
The “ruling majority” on the Surry County Board of Supervisors continues to ignore citizen input. It appears that showing control takes precedence over sound policy.
At the October board meeting, the “ruling majority” ignored citizen petitions, pleas, the good judgment of the county treasurer and commissioner of the revenue, and approved a twice-a-year tax payment scheme. It will create a hardship on many of our citizens and harm our farmers and the fragile agricultural community that makes Surry County a rural, pleasant place to reside.
At the same meeting, the “ruling majority” overruled the Planning Commission’s unanimous no vote and kept alive a solar project expansion in our county.
Citizen voices should matter. What is happening on our county board should not be allowed to go unchallenged. With silence, it will continue.
