It was blue versus red at Smithfield’s Luter Sports Complex on Nov. 2 as the town’s Police Department faced off against the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department in softball.

“The idea came from the Smithfield Police Department as a way to engage the public in a fun, light-hearted event,” said Smithfield Police spokesman Lt. William Wooley, who was among the players on the police team.

Wooley said the two teams organized in May and had been practicing since late August. The seven-inning game ended in a 24-16 score with the police as the victors.

The event drew an estimated 250 spectators. The game was free to attend with proceeds from the sale of t-shirts and sweatshirts, and a raffle, benefitting the two departments. Wooley said as of Nov. 4, the SPD didn’t have a total for how much money was raised. It will be divided evenly between the two departments, he said.

Sponsors who donated raffle prizes included the Smithfield Ice Cream Parlor, Smithfield Station, Wharf Hill Brewing Co., Powerhouse Equipment, the Cockeyed Rooster, the Smithfield Recreation Association, Jalapeños, the Farmers Table, Farmers Service Ace Hardware, Victoria’s Rose, Dave’s Service Center, Ryan’s Service Center and Cypress Creek Hauling and Recovery.
