Days Point area residents are again under a boil water notice.

The Isle of Wight County-owned well and water line serving the unincorporated neighborhood just outside Smithfield cut out for the third time this year on Nov. 18. Previous outages occurred on April 10 and the last weekend in January.

According to Assistant County Administrator Don Robertson, the most recent outage was the result of Verizon subcontractors severing the water line.

“The line has been repaired,” Robertson said on Nov. 20. “The boil water advisory is still in place pending satisfactory water tests.”

The April 10 outage was also caused by a break in the water main serving Days Point and Farm roads, and was also repaired within a day. The January outage, which lasted a day, was the result of a failure in the well screen that keeps rock fragments from entering the water supply, and resulted in the county having to drill a new well.

Days Point is one of three county-owned well systems slated to eventually be capped off and connected to the new 500,000-gallon water tower that serves Hardy Elementary, which receives its water supply from the town of Smithfield. The county has yet to establish a timetable for the project.
