Smithfield, Hampton to clash in football playoffs

Smithfield High will begin its quest for a state football championship Nov. 22, when the Hampton Crabbers cross the James River Bridge to meet the host Packers at 7 p.m.
Smithfield, which finished the regular season with a record of 8-2, secured the second seed and a first-round bye in the Class 4 Region A playoffs.
Hampton, 8-3, advanced to the second round with a 45-8 trouncing of Denbigh. The winner of the Smithfield-Hampton game will advance to the region finals on Nov. 29 against the Phoebus-Churchland winner.
Surry County High lost a 34-28 heartbreaker to rival Sussex Central in the first round of the Class 1 Region B playoffs on Nov. 15. Surry finished the season 3-8, while Sussex, 6-5, advances to play at top-seeded Altavista in the region semifinals on Nov. 22.
