The former Main Street Restaurant on the west end of Smithfield is getting a new lease on life.

David Lonberger, who owns Fatboy’s Grill and Steamshack restaurant on Carrollton Boulevard, says he and his wife, Christina, have leased the Main Street building from its owner, the Hearn family.

Lonberger said he hasn’t decided on a name or menu offerings for the West Main Street site yet, but confirmed it would not be a second Fatboy’s. He described the concept as a family-friendly restaurant serving American food.

Lonberger hopes to open by the beginning of January following minimal renovations.

Fatboy’s opened seven years ago and specializes in crab legs and other seafood.

Main Street Restaurant closed earlier this year following the May 9 death of one of its proprietors, Lea Katselos.

Katselos and her husband, Jimmy, had leased the space and opened Main Street Restaurant in 2007 at the site of the former Ken’s Barbecue following a dispute with the town that closed the Katselos’ previous venture, Angelo’s Steak and Seafood Restaurant, which had operated on South Church Street where the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department now stands.

For 17 years it was the sole sit-down eatery on West Main Street, offering a menu of Greek, Italian and American cuisine.
