Christmas came early to Smithfield on Nov. 22 with the return of the town’s annual tree lighting ceremony, held on the lawn outside The Smithfield Times office. Woman’s Club President Therry Boland filled in for Diane Hill as honorary tree lighter this year.
Coats, hats and earmuffs abounded at Smithfield’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony this year as wind gusts of up to 30 mph and a light drizzle made 42 degrees feel near freezing. Despite the weather, dozens of town residents came to the lawn to see the Joel Joyner Jazz Band and students with Trinity United Methodist Church’s preschool program and Hampton Roads Classical perform on the Main Street Square stage.
