It’s official. The Carrollton Publix will open Jan. 15.

Isle of Wight County residents craving a “Pub Sub,” the submarine-style sandwiches offered at Publix supermarkets, have been awaiting the opening of the Florida-based grocer’s newest store at 22449 Spadea Way since it broke ground in 2023.

Publix spokesman Jared Glover confirmed in a Jan. 3 news release that the 48,387-square-foot store would open at 7 a.m. on Jan. 15.

“We are excited to open our fourth location in the Hampton Roads area,” Glover said. “We look forward to delivering Publix’s legendary service and being active members in this great community.”

Glover said the store will employ roughly 140 associates.

Publix operates 22 stores across the state, according to its website. The opening of the Carrollton Publix follows the opening of a Publix in Virginia Beach on Dec. 12 and a roughly 45,000-square-foot Publix that opened in Suffolk at Godwin Boulevard and Kings Fork Road in 2023. They join an open store in Williamsburg and one listed as “coming soon” in Chesapeake that will be the fifth in Hampton Roads.

“We are thrilled that the brand-new Publix grocery store is set to open its doors in Carrollton,” said District 2 Isle of Wight County Supervisor William McCarty, whose district includes the new Publix. “This is not just the arrival of a new store; it’s a celebration of community growth, excellence, convenience, and quality service that we can all take pride in. Publix’s opening will boost our local economy by creating jobs, new tax revenue for the citizens, and providing more options for citizens to shop, save, and buy quality products. I am excited to see the positive impact this will have on our community and the opportunities it will provide for our residents. We welcome our new community partner, Publix.”

Plans to bring Publix to Carrollton began in 2022 when Jerry Bowman, developer of The Crossings at Bartlett Station, received approval from Isle of Wight County supervisors to scrap circa-2002 plans for a shopping center and instead subdivide The Crossings’ commercial phase into multiple, smaller parcels, one of which Bowman pledged would be an “upscale” national grocery chain. Plans for the Carrollton Publix on file with Isle of Wight County in 2022 called for an additional 7,200 square feet of attached retail space on an 11.28-acre parcel at the corner of two of The Crossings’ newly created roads: Lori Anne Way and Spadea Way, directly behind a new Royal Farms gas station and one turn off Carrollton Boulevard.

The Royal Farms opened in August, becoming the second business to open its doors in the development after a new branch of Langley Federal Credit Union, located at 14328 Lori Ann Way.

The Crossings’ residential phase, which is approved for up to 240 condominium units and 52 single-family homes, broke ground in 2021 and continues to build out.
