On Sunday evening, Isle of Wight County Schools announced on its social media accounts it was closing school on Monday, Jan. 6 due to the forecasted winter weather.
In the post, school officials said all schools were to be closed for students and teachers, which also includes all after-school and evening activities.
“We want to assure you that we have sufficient banked instructional time to cover this day, so no adjustments to the school calendar will be necessary at this time,” the social media post read.  “While we understand this is an early decision, we believe it is important to give families adequate time to make any necessary childcare arrangements. Additionally, we are aware of the potential for further inclement weather on Monday evening into Tuesday morning. We will continue to monitor conditions and communicate with staff and families on Monday evening if there is a need to adjust Tuesday’s schedule.”
Surry County Public Schools also announced Sunday evening that its schools would be closed on Monday.
A winter weather advisory the National Weather Service’s Wakefield station issued Sunday forecasts snow and sleet accumulations up to two inches and ice accumulations up to one- to two-tenths of an inch over portions of southeast Virginia, including Isle of Wight and Surry counties.
